Element partitioning at reaction interfaces in a reactive diffusion setting

Abstrakt:

We report on experimental layer growth of magnesio aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) at periclase (MgO) corundum (Al2O3) interfaces. Periclase and corundum were contacted and annealed at 1350°C and ambient pressure for 5 to 160 hours. Along the contact a spinel layer formed showing parabolic growth. The spinel exhibits monotonic decrease in Al content from the spinel-corundum interface to the spinel-periclase interface. Whereas the Al-content of spinel is constantly about one mole percent above the equilibrium composition at the spinel-periclase interface, the Al-content of spinel increases with run duration approaching but never attaining local equilibrium at the spinel-corundum interface. Based on these experimental data the kinetic parameters describing long-range diffusion and interface motion in a thermodynamic model are calibrated.
